FAQ

After being a nanny for several years I get asked a lot of the same questions.  I thought it would be helpful to answer them on the blog:

1.  How long have you been a nanny?

I have been a consistent babysitter/nanny for 9 years.  When I was in college I had three families (nine children) that I was most consistent with and learned a lot from.  I moved to Memphis during the last semester of college and I graduated in December.  I didn’t want to get a teaching job in the middle of the school year and I was in the middle of a discipleship program so I began to ask around if anyone needed help.  I met my first family and then I gained several other family’s I was able to help.  For two years I had about 10 kids that I saw weekly and several other family’s that I would babysit on the weekends.  

2.  How many kids do I watch?

In 2012 I began working for one family that has a crew of five children, four of them being quadruplets.  This year the quads started school so now I bounce between them and their cousins which are three boys.

3.  Do you enjoy your job?

YES!  I really do enjoy my job.  I’m thankful for great bosses and awesome kids that make life fun!

4.  What do you do on your days off?

My favorite are the days that I don’t have to set an alarm, I stay in pajamas as long as possible and don’t put my contacts in till after noon.  I enjoy sewing which inspired me to start Mae Mae Designs, I like working out, grabbing coffee with a friend, reading at a fun coffee shop, long boarding and writing letters sent via snail mail!

5.  Do you babysit on the side?

Most of my weeks get filled up and I’ve learned I need a day to catch up on life and a day of rest.  I do however have some weeks that the family’s I work for are out of town which opens up my time to be able to help others.

6.  Do you I have any other girls I would recommend to babysit?

Right now I am working on how to streamline and create a site that can help connect great sitters with great families.  As of right now I don’t have a list of girls that I know who are available.

7.  How did you learn to be a nanny?

When I first started in college I knew I enjoyed kids and liked being around families since mine was six hours away.  The moms I worked for then were a huge foundation in how I learned.  I watched them and  followed their instructions on how they ran their house.  As I got comfortable, I began to take initiatives in helping around the house and it was a blessing to them.  I’m still learning but am SO very thankful for all the moms that have allowed me into their homes, taught by example, was patient with me when I didn’t know how to do something and encouraged me along the way.  

8.  What are some of your favorite kid activities?

side walk chalk, crayons and coloring books, legos, red light/green light, reading inside of a blanket tent and painting nails.

9.  Whats your favorite age range?

Majority of my time in the home has been spent with 5 and younger.  I really enjoy the 2-3 age because they are discovering so much and learning how to communicate.   4-5 age can be really fun cause they are more independant and capable of doing more with you.  

10.  What does Mae Mae stand for?

One of the first families I started working for in Memphis had three children, at the time they were three, 18 months and 3 months.  Their middle son was learning how to talk but couldn’t say Ms. Megan so he started calling me Mae Mae. I carried that name with me to other families cause it was easier for the children to say.  I find it endearing to have a nickname as a nanny cause I don’t feel so much like a babysitter but apart of the family.
